Beginner resource centre
Starting your badminton journey with the right foundations. Learn proper grip biomechanics, essential shoe requirements, and what to expect on your very first day on court.
Non-marking shoes (mandatory)
Unlike outdoor running shoes with black rubber soles, badminton requires gum-sole or specialized non-marking court shoes. Running shoes grip the synthetic mat too aggressively during lateral slides, risking twisted ankles and knee injuries. Non-marking shoes offer lateral stability and prevent black scuffs on synthetic mats.
The universal "handshake" V-grip
The most common beginner error is the "frying pan" grip (holding the racket like a hammer). At Nitesh Academy, Day 1 starts with the handshake V-grip. The index finger and thumb form a V down the side bevel of the handle, enabling wrist extension and rotation on clears, smashes, and drop shots.
What to bring on day 1
- Non-marking badminton shoes (change into them inside the hall, not outdoors)
- Lightweight, sweat-wicking athletic t-shirt and shorts
- 1-liter water bottle for hydration between multi-shuttle intervals
- Small hand towel
- Your badminton racket (or loaner provided for your trial)
