How Virar built a badminton championship pipeline
The story of an academy founded not on corporate funding, but on intense multi-shuttle drilling, player dedication, and hometown loyalty.
Nitesh Badminton Academy was formed out of a refusal to accept that elite sporting infrastructure belonged solely to India's traditional metropolitan centers. In Palghar District, families routinely faced the agonizing choice of either letting their children's athletic talents stagnate or sending 12-year-olds away to residential academies in faraway states.
The high-performance training foundation
Establishing its dedicated tournament training home at Old Viva College in Virar West alongside its primary administrative headquarters in Vashi, the academy invested in BWF-standard synthetic court mats, shock-absorbing underlays, and specialized shuttle feeder stations. Under certified coaching faculty and technical leadership, training sessions were structured to rival any national camp in intensity.
The 8-hour work ethic
Unlike commercial clubs where children hit shuttles casually for forty minutes, the elite squad at Nitesh Academy was put through a grueling 6 to 8 hour daily regimen: 6:00 AM shadow footwork, midday conditioning, afternoon multi-shuttle feeding, and evening 2-on-1 overload match simulations.
"I started with Nitesh Badminton Academy in Palghar and stuck with it despite getting regular offers from the big centres. I train for nearly eight hours a day and am happy with the results. I don't have any plans to shift anywhere as I get the best coaching in my hometown." Source: Dev Ruparelia to The Times of India (November 2024)
Podiums that shocked the circuit
The payoff for this uncompromising approach reverberated across the sport:
- May 2023: An all-Nitesh Academy final at the Maharashtra State Open U-17 Championship, where Dev Ruparelia defeated teammate Tanay Mehendale 21-17, 21-17.
- November 2024: Dev clinched the All India Sub-Junior U-17 National Ranking title in Jaipur, defeating National No. 1 junior Jagsher Singh Khangurra 21-18, 21-14.
- August 2026: Dev captured back-to-back BWF Junior International titles: Gold at the KOTAK India Junior International Series (Hyderabad) and Gold at the Yonex-Sunrise India Junior International Grand Prix (Pune).
Today, Nitesh Badminton Academy stands as living proof that when world-class biomechanics meet small-town hunger, world-class athletes emerge.
